Box Score Box Score

OSWEGO, N.Y.—
The nationally ranked No. 2 Oswego men's hockey team scored the game-winning goal late in the third period to come up with a 2-1 win over Hobart in a non-conference game played tonight at Oswego's Campus Center Ice Arena.

The Lakers improved to 9-1-2 on the season.  The Statesmen fell to 5-6-0 with the loss.

Both squads played to a scoreless tie at the end of the first period despite each team having three power-play chances. The Statesmen nearly got on the scoreboard in the seventh minute of the second period when first-year Ryan Michel took a shot that clanged off the crossbar.  On the ensuing Oswego rush, Chris Brown moved the puck from the goal line to the top of the left faceoff circle, where he wristed a shot off the left post past Hobart netminder junior Marty Ausserhofer at the 6:34 mark.

Hobart nearly leveled the score with just over eight minutes remaining in the frame when junior David Stevens ripped a shot that careened off the left post.  With the Statesmen starting to gain momentum, they went on the power play at 16:06 after a Laker tripping penalty.  Stevens had another shot go off the right post during the power play making the number of post shots for Hobart during the period increase to three.

The Statesmen increased pressure in the Oswego State defensive end as the third period wore on until Ryan Corcoran's blast from the right point found the back of the net to tie the game at one with 7:25 elapsed in the period.

The deadlock last for over six minutes until Jesse McConney laced a shot from the right point between Ausserhofer's legs into the back of the net at the 13:50 mark to give the Lakers a tenuous 2-1 lead.  McConney was on the receiving end of a pass from Luke Moodie who was near the goal line on the right side of the ice.

Hobart had a golden opportunity at the end of regulation when Oswego State was whistled for a tripping penalty with 2:12 to play.  The Statesmen pulled Ausserhofer with 30.3 seconds on the clock after a timeout to gain a 6-on-4 advantage, but the Laker penalty kill kept Hobart off the scoreboard.  As the final shot was ripped from the blue line, Kyle Badham blocked the shot, preventing it from reaching the traffic in front of the goal.

Laker goaltender Andrew Hare came up big for the Lakers, recording 11 of his 19 saves in the final period.

Neither team capitalized on power-play situations as both programs went 0-for-4.  Ausserhofer ended the game with 23 saves for Hobart.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Jan. 6 when they host Curry for another non-conference game in The Cooler at 7 p.m.
