Herons win Wendy's 3rd place game 72-59 over RIT

Box Score HENRIETTA, N.Y.—The William Smith basketball team won the third place game of the Wendy's College Classic 72-59 over RIT in a non-conference meeting in Clark Gym. The Herons had three players hit double digits in the scoring column led by junior guard Sydni Salvatore's game-high 18 points.

William Smith (3-2) played an unselfish game, earning assists on 20 of its 25 field goals, including nine 3-pointers. The Herons had a 38-32 rebounding advantage and  used their defense to turn 21 Tiger turnovers into 22 points. Salvatore was 6-of-12 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Sophomore guard Sasha Borenstein finished the day 6-of-9 from the floor with five triples for 17 points. First-year forward Chole Hayter produced a season-high 12 points and blocked two shots, while junior guard Jaimie Rubin chipped in six points and a game-high six assists.

RIT got a double-double from Kayla Wheeler on 11 points and 10 rebounds and Courtney Tennant added 10 points and seven boards.

The first half featured 13 lead changes. Wheeler hit a pair of free throws at the 3:35 mark of the first half for a 33-31 Tigers lead. Borenstein countered with a 3 to put the Herons in front. Jackie Horn's jumper at the 2:57 mark gave RIT its final lead of the game. Borenstein made consecutive 3-pointers to put William Smith in front 40-35 on the way to a 43-40 halftime lead.

While neither team was able to maintain its sharp shooting form of the first half, but the Tigers took a more precipitous drop (68.4% to 25.9%). The Herons were also made more second half free throws (11) than RIT attempted (8).

William Smith led throughout the second half, used a 17-6 run to build a 14-point cushion with 10 minutes left. The Herons led by at least eight points the rest of the way. 

William Smith will be back in action at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, when the Herons host Rochester in Bristol Gym.
