GENEVA, N.Y.—The 11th ranked Elmira College hockey team defeated No. 14 Hobart 3-0 tonight in an ECAC West game played at The Cooler. The Statesmen are now 13-7-2 overall and 3-5-1 in the ECAC West. Elmira improves to 14-5-3 and 7-2-0 in league play.
After two penalties were called on each team at 15 minutes, 57 seconds in the first period, the Soaring Eagles took a 1-0 lead at 16:17. Jesper Strale scored his sixth goal of the season off assists from Colin Hoey and Larry Willard.
Elmira's 1-0 lead stood through the second period, despite Hobart out-shooting the Soaring Eagles 10-6 in the middle stanza. John Clewlow scored twice in the third period. His first goal came just 1:46 into the period. He took a pass from Tyler Campbell and put a shot just over the glove of Hobart's sophomore goaltender
Nick Broadwater.
The Statesmen pulled Broadwater for an extra skater with 59 seconds left in regulation, but could not capitalize as Clewlow scored an empty net goal with 21 seconds remaining for the final margin. It was Clewlow's sixth goal this year. Karl Linden and Rick Schrank earned the assists.
Broadwater finished with 25 saves in goal for Hobart. Darren McDonald turned aside all 21 shots that he faced. Elmira held a 28-21 advantage in shots. Each team went 0-for-2 on the power play.
The Statesmen will travel to Elmira to play the Soaring Eagles again tomorrow, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m.
