#3 Herons edge Cortland 1-0

Box Score

GENEVA, N.Y.—Despite a two and a half hour delay due to severe storms and lightening in the area, the No. 3 William Smith soccer team edged visiting Cortland 1-0 this afternoon in the final game of the Heron Cup played on Cozzens Field. The Herons improve to 4-0-1, while the Red Dragons are now 2-2-0.

There were a little over 16 minutes of play before lightening in the area sent both teams back into the locker rooms for what turned out to be a two and a half hour delay. Action resumed just before 5 p.m.

William Smith came out ready to play. The Herons first real scoring chance came in the 59th minute, when senior Kate Redmond carried the ball deep into the box. Cortland's keeper came out to try to play the ball. Redmond was able to maneuver around her and fired a shot that was saved by a Red Dragon defender.

After having an earlier goal called off, William Smith broke through in the 71st minute. Junior Kelsey Hill pushed a pass into the box to set up first-year Krista Longo who sent a header into the back of the net. It was Longo's first collegiate tally and proved to all the Herons would need for the win.

William Smith enjoyed a 17-3 advantage in shots and a 9-2 lead in corner kicks. Amanda Davis played all 90 minutes in goal for the Herons and did not need to make a single save to earn her fourth shutout. It is the fifth straight shutout for the Herons defense this season. Pam Monnier finished the day with nine saves.

The Herons will travel to take on Buffalo State on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 4 p.m.
