#10 Statesmen shut out Cardinals

Box Score

GENEVA, N.Y.—Senior Evan Grey scored two goals to lead the No. 10 Hobart soccer team to a 2-0 win over St. John Fisher in a non-league match played this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Statesmen improved to 5-0-0, and the Cardinals are now 1-4-0 this season.

Senior goalkeeper Charlie Hale played all 90 minutes in goal and stopped all three shots that he faced. He earned his third shutout of the season. Hale has now played 367:11 this fall without allowing a single goal.

Grey put Hobart on the scoreboard first in the 24th minute. Senior Andrew Steates kept the ball in play right in front of the St. John Fisher bench and then booted a pass up the field. Grey collected the ball and out ran a Cardinal defender for a one-on-one situation with the keeper. He placed a shot just out of Kyle Metcalfe's reach.

St. John Fisher had one of its best scoring chances at the end of the first half. Just 12 seconds before the break, Stephan John fired a shot that banged off the crossbar.

Then in the 53rd minute, Grey added to Hobart's lead. Sophomore Kaeghan Kelly sent a crossing pass that found Grey right in front of the goal. He fired a shot into the back of the net for his second goal of the day. Kelly earned his second assist in as many games.

The Statesmen enjoyed a 17-11 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. Metcalfe played the opening 56:35 in goal for St. John Fisher and stopped three shots. Brendan Kazmierski played the final 33:25 and finished with two saves.

Hobart will be back on action on Saturday, Sept. 17 when the University of Rochester comes to Cozzens Field for a match at 2 p.m.
