ITHACA, N.Y.—Sophomore
Margaret McConnell scored with just 33 seconds remaining to lift the 14th-ranked William Smith field hockey team to a 2-1 win at Ithaca tonight. The victory raises the Herons record to 5-0, while the Bombers fall to 0-3.
In the 38th minute, William Smith found itself trailing for the first time all season when Lindsay Flanagan netted her first goal of the season for a 1-0 Ithaca lead.
Junior
Annie Kietzman redirected a
Taylor Cappello shot in the 54th minute to square the match. The Herons, who outshot the Bombers 29-7, stayed on the offensive, earning a penalty corner in the waning seconds. Senior
Kiersten Hamilton set up McConnell's game-winner with a pass from the right wing. McConnell placed her shot inside the right post for her fourth goal of the year.
William Smith, which was held without a first half goal for the first time in 2011, almost fell into an early hole, sophomore Morgan Atansio came up with a defensive save on a Flanagan shot to keep the match scoreless.

Taryn Little made three saves to earn the win. Kelly Singleton logged 12 saves for Ithaca.
The Herons will be back in action on Sept. 17-18, when they host the annual William Smith Classic. The Herons will take on Manhattanville in the opener at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The match will be broadcast on
