This weekend, the Heron field hockey team will host the annual William Smith Classic. Every year since 1997, William Smith has invited squads to Geneva for top-notch competition. The Herons will welcome Manhattanville College, St. Lawrence University and Lebanon Valley College for four matches on McCooey Field.
On Saturday, Sept. 17, William Smith (5-0) will kick off the tournament against Manhattanville (3-0) at 2 p.m. Currently ranked No. 14 by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association, the balanced Heron attack is led by sophomore
Taylor Cappello and junior
Annie Kietzman. Cappello leads the conference in points (14) and goals (6), while Kietzman has four goals and three assists through five games. The Valiants average 5.7 goals per game, but the William Smith defense—anchored by junior goalkeeper
Taryn Little and junior backs
Alyssa David and
Sara Helmer—aims to stifle this high-powered offense. St. Lawrence (3-1) and Lebanon Valley (1-3) will follow, squaring off at 4 p.m.
On Sunday, Manhattanville will play St. Lawrence at 1 p.m. For the tournament's fourth and final match, the Herons will face the Flying Dutchmen. Start time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
WHWS-FM (105.7) will broadcast both William Smith games. Fans can also follow the action online with
