Hamilton, Kietzman lead Herons to big win over Valiants

GENEVA, N.Y.—
Senior Kiersten Hamilton and junior Annie Kietzman produced five points apiece to lead the No. 14 William Smith field hockey team to a 5-0 victory over previously unbeaten Manhattanville in the first game of the William Smith Classic at McCooey Field. Both players recorded two goals and an assist.

Hamilton opened the day's scoring when the Herons (6-0) earned a penalty corner in the fifth minute. Junior Alyssa David set up Hamilton's flip shot from the left wing that sailed over the Valiants' keeper into the far corner of the cage.

Less than 10 minutes later, Hamilton assisted on Kietzman's first strike, a turnaround shot from 2 yards off the left post. William Smith carried a 3-0 lead into halftime when sophomore Margaret McConnell batted home a centering pass from sophomore Julia Simmons in the 21st minute.

The Herons kept the pressure on in the second half. In the 38th minute, Hamilton scored on a blast from the top of the circle on a penalty corner insertion from Kietzman. Kietzman wrapped up the day's scoring with her team-leading sixth goal of the year, batting home a rebound in the 46th minute.

Junior Taryn Little earned the win in goal for the Herons, making two saves in 63 minutes of work, while sophomore Amy Hilton turned back six shots in a full 70 minutes at the other end of the field.

William Smith will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 18, when take on Lebanon Valley in the William Smith Classic finale at 3 p.m. Manhattanville (3-1) will battle St. Lawrence on McCooey Field at 1 p.m.
