GENEVA, N.Y.—The 18th-ranked William Smith field hockey team flooded the Geneseo State goal in a 5-1 non-conference victory at McCooey Field tonight. Sophomores
Julia Simmons and
Taylor Cappello notched two goals apiece to lead the Herons.
Played in conditions that ranged from a steady rain to torrential downpours, the first half featured two evenly match sides. Geneseo (6-4) had some chances early, but couldn't capitalize. The same could be said of William Smith, that is until Simmons broke through in the 32nd minute. The goal, assisted by junior
Annie Kietzman, gave the Herons (8-2) a lift and 73 seconds later, Cappello doubled William Smith's lead.
Less than five minutes into the second half, Simmons stretched the lead to 3-0, finishing a feed from senior
Kiersten Hamilton. A short time later, the Herons put the game out of reach with back-to-back tallies 89 second apart. Cappello swept in
Margaret McConnell's shot at 51:23 and then Hamilton put one home off an assist from sophomore
Melanie O'Connor.
With the Herons in front 5-0, both teams sent in their backup goalies. William Smith junior
Taryn Little headed to the bench with six saves, while Geneseo's Caitlyn Dowell was credited with two stops.
In the 58th minute, the Blue Knights broke up the shutout. Kayla DeAngelis set the table for Kerry Hosford's second goal of the year.
The Herons held the advantage in both shots (15-12) and penalty corners (6-3).
William Smith will be back in action at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, when the Herons host Liberty League foe Union (0-7).
