SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—The No. 18 Hobart soccer team picked up its first Liberty League victory of the season, knocking off Skidmore 1-0 at Wachenheim Field. Junior
Caetano Sanchez delivered his first goal of the season to give the Statesmen the victory.
After a scoreless first half, Sanchez got his head on a ball played into the middle off the foot of junior
Taylor Jones. The 72nd minute marker proved to be the only goal of the match, but not without some drama.
A few minutes later, the Thoroughbreds (4-6-0, 1-2-0) tried to answer on a shot from Diego Reinero that was swatted away by Hobart goalie
Charlie Hale, forcing a corner. On the corner, Andrew Blake corralled a loose ball and sent it on frame, but a Statesman defender was able to clear it off the line.
Hale earned the win with two saves, while Nick Peterson made three stops for Skidmore.
The Thoroughbreds outshot Hobart, 9-8, but the Statesmen (8-1-0, 1-1-0) held a 9-7 advantage in penalty corners.
Hobart will be back in action at 2 p.m. on Oct. 1, when the Statesmen vist Union.
