Hobart falls to Geneseo 6-2

GENESEO, N.Y.—
The Geneseo men's ice hockey team jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period and held on to defeat Hobart 6-2 in a non-conference game played tonight. The Blue Knights improved to 10-6-0 overall, while the Statesmen slipped to 7-7-0 this season.

Twelve different Blue Knights recorded at least one point. Stefan Decosse led Geneseo with a goal and two assists. Jonathan Redlick chipped in a goal and an assist. First-year Ryan Michel and junior David Stevens each scored for Hobart.

Geneseo started its scoring 11:49 into the first period Zachary Vit found the back of the net after a pass from Carson Schnell. Just 1:07 later, Redlick made it 2-0. Danny Scagnelli and Ryan Bulach earned the assists. At 15:33, Clint Olson fired a shot past Hobart goalie, junior Marty Ausserhofer. Brandon Angotti and Redlick set up the play.

With 4:19 left in the first period, a hit by junior Mike White broke the glass, and the teams were sent to the locker rooms. They came back out after the intermission to play the remaining 4:19 and then officially begin the second period.

Geneseo continued to add to its lead in the second stanza. At 2:03 in, Decosse logged an unassisted tally to put the Blue Knights up 4-0.

The Statesmen finally broke through at 5:50 in the middle period. Michel was able to take advantage of a power play after passes from junior Frank Salituro and White to make it 4-1. It was his third goal this winter. Taking advantage of another power play, junior Ryan Corcoran drilled a shot on goal that was tipped in by Stevens. Stevens cut the Hobart deficit to two with his third goal of the season.

The Blue Knights did not let up. A goal by Justin Scharfe after passes from Decosse and Jimmy Powers made it 5-2 at 16:48 in the second. Jake Yard put Geneseo back up by four on a power-play goal with 1:21 remaining in the second. Decosse and David Arduid tallied the assists.

In the third period, Hobart recorded an 8-6 edge in shots, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.

Geneseo held a slight 31-30 advantage in total shots. Ausserhofer finished with 25 saves in goal for Hobart, while Adrian Rubeniuk stopped 28 shots in net for the Blue Knights. The Statesmen were 2-for-5 on the power play, and Geneseo went 1-for-2.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 14 when they host Nichols for another non-conference game beginning at 4 p.m.
