Bonney's 19 lead Statesmen to 91-62 win over Drew

Box Score LANCASTER, Pa.—Sophomore forward Richie Bonney scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Hobart College basketball team to a 91-62 victory over Drew University in the opening game of the Sponaugle New Year's Tournament hosted by Franklin & Marshall College. The Statesmen shot 58.6 percent from the floor and committed just eight turnovers while sending the Rangers to their seventh straight loss.

Bonney had his way in the paint today, knocking down 8-of-12 from the floor, 3-of-4 from the line. He also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Senior forward Matt Pebole netted 14 points, raising his career total to 1,307 and moving past Rich Kolmetz '77 into eighth place on Hobart's career scoring list. Senior forward Josh Kalenderian and sophomore guard Joe Gibbons chipped in 10 points apiece.

Terrell Brown recorded 16 points and six rebounds to pace the Rangers. Robby Bier added 11 points.

Senior guard Greg Stern scored the game's opening basket. After Drew equalized, Stern hit another jumper and drained a 3-pointer to put the Statesmen in front for good. Hobart (7-1) gradually pulled away from the Rangers (2-9) to take a 36-25 lead into halftime.

Drew shot 50 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, compared to 46.3 percent for the Statesmen. Hobart held the lead thanks to turnovers. The Statesmen had just three miscues compared to nine for the Rangers. Hobart had a 9-0 advantage in points off turnovers at the break.

After the break, the Statesmen shot the lights out, putting down 21-of-30 from the field. Hobart stretched its lead to as many as 20 in the first 10 minutes of the half. A 9-2 run by the Rangers cut the Statesmen lead to 13, but Hobart ended the game with a 27-11 surge to secure the win.

The Statesmen finished the game with a 20-2 advantage in points off turnovers and a 44-24 edge in points in the paint.

Hobart will take on No. 9 Franklin & Marshall, a 68-55 winner over Misericordia, in the Sponaugle championship game at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
