#18 Herons down Vassar 4-1

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith senior Whitney Frary notched two goals and an assist to lead the No. 18 Heron soccer team to a 4-1 Liberty League victory over visiting Vassar this afternoon on Cozzens Field.

The Herons improve to 10-2-1 overall and 5-1-0 in conference play. Vassar falls to 8-5-0 overall and 3-3-0 in the Liberty League.

With exactly five minutes left in the first half, sophomore Brenna Kincaid scored her second goal of the season. She blasted a shot from 25 yards out into the back of the net to give William Smith a 1-0 advantage going into halftime.

In the 63rd minute, the Brewers broke through to even things up. Vassar was awarded a free kick a few yards outside of the box. Sarah Bourenane took the kick, passing to Kelsey Domb on her right. Domb sent a shot into the goal from just inside the box.

The Herons did not take long to respond. Just 3:10 later, a pass by Fray from the top of the box found senior Renee Jensen right at the goal line. Jensen tapped the ball in for her fifth tally this season.

Frary then scored back-to-back goals to stretch the Heron lead to three. She struck first in the 85th minute. Sophomore Caitlyn Mitchell banged a shot off the crossbar, but collected the rebound and pushed a short pass to Frary. She fired through the crowd in front of the goal to make it 3-1. Frary scored her sixth goal of the season 1:12 later. Sophomore Madeline Buckley sent a pass ahead to Frary who broke by her defender for a one-on-one with the keeper and was able to slide her shot past the Brewer goalie.

Junior Chelsea Dunay played all 90 minutes in goal for William Smith and finished with three saves. Ali Higgins notched four saves for Vassar. The Herons enjoyed an 18-9 lead in shots and a 3-2 edge in corners.

William Smith will be back in action tomorrow, Oct. 13, when it hosts Bard for another Liberty League match.
