The William Smith College field hockey team is ranked 15th in the nation for the second straight week in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll. The Herons will host a pair of Liberty League matches this weekend when St. Lawrence and No. 4 Skidmore visit McCooey Field.
William Smith is riding a seven-match winning streak, taking an 8-1 overall record into the weekend. The Herons are 2-0 in conference play. Senior forward
Annie Kietzman leads the team with 12 goals and 12 assists for 36 points. She's scored at least two points in every match this season and leads the nation in assists per game (1.33). Junior forward
Taylor Cappello is second on the team in goals (10) and points (22) while junior defender
Morgan Atanasio is second in assists (4).
Defensively, sophomore goalie
Catherine Hare leads the Liberty League with a 0.98 goals against average and is fifth with an .800 save percentage.
The Saints (2-7, 1-1) travel to Geneva for a 4 p.m. match on Friday, Oct. 5. SLU lost its first six matches of the year, but is 2-1 in its last three contests, including a 6-1 conference win over Vassar. Since 1990, the Herons are 22-5 against the Saints, including a 4-3 come-from-behind win in Canton last season.
Skidmore (9-1, 3-0) has a half game lead over William Smith. The Herons and Thoroughbreds will square off at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6. The match will feature the two highest scoring offenses in the league (William Smith 4.56 gpg vs. Skidmore 4.1). The Herons hold a slim 13-12 lead in the series' last 25 meetings, but the Thoroughbreds haven't lost to William Smith since 2007.
