Dutchmen slide by Statesmen in double overtime

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The Union College men's soccer team scored 52 seconds into the second overtime period to edge Hobart 2-1 in a Liberty League match played this afternoon on Cozzens Field.

The Statesmen fall to 9-5-0 overall and 3-4-0 in league play. Union is now 11-3-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the conference.

Hobart struck first in the 42nd minute. The Statesmen earned a corner kick, which was sent into the box by junior Kaeghan Kelly. He found first-year Zico Gaeffke who sent a diving header into the back of the net. It was Gaeffke's second goal this season.

Union answered in the 54th minute. James Skelton carried the ball into the box, and beat his defender for a one-on-one with the keeper. He slid his shot past Hobart goalie, sophomore Mike Lucas, to tie things up at one.

In the 76th minute, the Statesmen came close to breaking the tie. Senior Caetano Sanchez came streaking into the box for a one-on-one with the keeper, but his shot went inches wide of the far left post. Neither team could net the go-ahead goal through the remainder of regulation.

It appeared that the Dutchmen scored the game-winner 2:36 into the first overtime, but the goal was called off due to Union being whistled offsides. Just 31 seconds into the second overtime, Union earned a corner. In a flurry of action in front of the goal, Sam Hunter pushed a short pass to Sebastiaan Jansen who drilled a shot into the goal from the left side.

Hobart held a 25-11 advantage in shots. Each team earned five corner kicks in the match. Lucas finished with three saves in all 100:52 in goal for the Statesmen. Ryan Carter stopped 10 shots for the Dutchmen.

Hobart will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 23, when the Statesmen travel to take on Fredonia in a non-league match beginning at 7 p.m.
