Statesmen fall to Fredonia 3-2

Box Score The Hobart College soccer team was edged 3-2 by Fredonia in a non-league match played tonight in Fredonia, N.Y.

The Blue Devils ended their season with a 5-13-1 record. The Statesmen are now 9-6-0 overall, and will play the final match of the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 27, when they travel to take on RIT in a Liberty League contest.

Senior Caetano Sanchez led Hobart with a goal and an assist. First-year Jacob Fox also notched a goal for the Statesmen. Hobart held a 30-7 advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge in corners. The Blue Devils keeper, Mike Schreiner, made 11 saves in the match. Sophomore goalie Mike Lucas finished with three saves for Hobart.

Sanchez opened the scoring at 21:48 when he received a pass from senior Alex Kittelberger, settled the ball, and chipped a shot into the open right side. Sanchez's seventh goal gave the Statesmen a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The teams then combined for three goals in a span of six minutes early in the second half. Fredonia's Luke Tylutki scored his first goal of the season for a 1-1 tie at 53:46. It came after passes by David Nichols and Patrick Schuber.

The Statesmen regained the lead when Fox chipped the ball over Schreiner, who had fallen after he came off his line, at 59:42. Following the ensuing re-start, Schuber dribbled from midfield through two defenders and struck a left-footer past the Hobart goalkeeper, tying the game up in a matter of 45 seconds.

Jay Dry scored the game-winning goal in the 79th minute.  After quick passes from Schuber and Mike Biggane, Dry sent the ball into the back of the net from the left wing to secure the victory for the Blue Devils.
