For the second year in a row, the William Smith College varsity eight returned from the Head of the Fish regatta in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., with a silver medal. It's the third straight year the Herons have medal at the Fish, collecting a bronze in the novice eight in 2010.

The varsity eight of Kim Goral, Libby Hughes, Katie Paige, Caroline DeWeirdt, Laura Cappio, Sarah Gordon, Emily Andersen, Alyssa Trebilcock, and Jess Steketee powered down the 3,350-meter course in 12:01.78, finishing second out of 20 entries. Williams College earned the gold in 11:43.07. Division I UConn was third in 12:09.36.

The second varsity eight of Susan Tuvell, Emily Shelden, Morgan Burgess, Kristen Brayden, Leila Peraro, Emma Dow, Carissa Boire, Alanna Dugan, and Emma Tiedemann logged a time of 13:04.09 to finish sixth out of 16 entries in the collegiate JV8 event.

“Coming off of the final week of training we had some strong technical goals in the 1V and 2V,” Head Coach Sandra Chu said. “I'm pleased that we were able to accomplish them. The 1V rowed the best technical race it has had all season, and they were finally able to execute their race plan to the letter. We're proud to have beaten Division I competitors UConn, UMass and Colgate. Obviously we still have some work to do to catch Williams—they had a great day today—but we definitely embrace that challenge.

“The 2V has struggled with consistency in its speed and gave the most consistent splits to date. This is a great step for the middle of our program.”

William Smith's novice eight also enjoyed a strong performance today. Amanda Salzman, Brianna Taylor, Grace Hutton, Alex Belden, Karly Wagner, Emma Fricke, Catherine Pirie, Megan Miskovsky, and Teaganne Finn were fourth out of 28 crews. The posted a time of 14:15.0, 24.16 seconds away from a medal. The Herons' second novice eight was 17th in the same event, crossing the finish line in 16:00.62.

William Smith also entered crews in the varsity four and novice four. The V4 was 23rd out of 33 with a time of 16:11.8 and the 2N4 was eighth (15:46.0) and the N4 was 10th (16:25.77) out of 16.

“Under Lindsey Hochman's mentorship this fall, the novice program showed strongly today. It was exciting to see them putting together those last few pieces of the puzzle to finish out their season.

“This fall was a great one for Herons and we have a fantastic place from which to start our championship season in March.”
