Herons top Penn State Behrend 3-0 in NCAA tournament 1st round match

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 8 William Smith soccer team scored three goals in the second half to defeat Penn State Behrend 3-0 in an NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship first round match played today on Cozzens Field. The Herons are now 14-2-3 overall, and the Lions finish their season with a 12-9-0 overall record.

William Smith will face Cortland in a second round match tomorrow, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. on Cozzens Field. The Red Dragons edged Springfield 1-0 in the other NCAA tournament first round match played in Geneva this afternoon.

The Herons outshot the Lions 16-0 in the first half, but could not find the back of the net. William Smith also earned six corners in the opening 45 minutes. With 12:30 left in the first, sophomore Caitlyn Mitchell had one of the Herons' closes calls. Senior Whitney Frary pushed a short pass to Mitchell at the top of the box. Mitchell lined up and fired, but her shot went just inches wide of the left post.

William Smith broke through in the 50th minute. Sophomore MaryClaire Pelletier sent in a corner kick, finding Frary in the box who drilled a shot through a crowd in front of the goal and into the back of the net. Sophomore Brenna Kincaid made it 2-0 in the 62nd minute. She carried the ball into the box. A Lion defender attempted to take it away, but Kincaid regained control and fired into the back of the net.

In the 65th the Herons extended their lead to three. Frary took a free kick for William Smith at the top of the box. She sent it into sophomore Madeline Buckley who was cutting in from the right side and sent a shot into the left side of the goal.

Penn State Behrend had its best scoring chance with just under eight minutes remaining. Valerie Wagner broke through the William Smith defense and fired a shot on goal, but junior goalie Chelsea Dunay was there to make the stop.

The Herons enjoyed a 29-2 advantage in shots and a 10-0 lead in corners. Dunay stopped the only shot she faced. Troyan Taylor finished with 12 saves in all 90 minutes for Penn State Behrend.
