GENEVA, N.Y.—The sixth-ranked Hobart hockey team defeated Neumann 2-1 in an ECAC West game played tonight at The Cooler. First-year
Ben Gamache and sophomore
Bronson Kovacs scored for the Statesmen.
Hobart is now 9-0-2 overall and 4-0-2 in conference play. The Statesmen extended their unbeaten streak to 11, the longest to start a season in Hobart hockey history. The Knights fell to 4-3-1 overall and 2-3-0 in the ECAC West.
The Statesmen recorded a 13-9 advantage in shots in the first period, but neither team could find the back of the net. All three goals in the game came in the second period. Gamache put Hobart up 1-0 just 2:48 into the second. He carried the puck into the zone and drilled a shot from just inside the right circle. It was his fifth goal this season.
The Knights answered at 9:02 in the second. Chris Bournazos tied the game at one sending a shot into the right side of the net right after Jake Kratz won a faceoff for Neumann.
Kovacs took back the lead for Hobart at 12:02 of the middle period. With a penalty call coming against the Knights, sophomore
Robert Sovik found Kovacs who sent home the shot. Sophomore
Terrence O'Neill also logged an assist on the play. It was Kovacs' second goal of the season and proved to be the game-winner as neither team scored in the final period.
At 4:15 in the third period, Neumann had a chance to tie things up. Andrew Love came extremely close to tipping in a shot. The puck started to slide past senior goalie,
Nick Broadwater, but he reached behind and made the save just before it could cross the line. Broadwater played all 60 minutes in goal for Hobart and finished with 28 saves. The Knights pulled their goalie, Braely Torris, with 1:10 left in regulation for an extra skater, but the Statesmen held off Neumann's final push. Torris finished with 34 saves.
Hobart held a 36-29 advantage in shots. The Statesmen were 0-for-6 on the power play, while the Knights were 0-for-4.
Neumann and Hobart will meet again tomorrow, Dec. 1 at 4 p.m. in The Cooler for another ECAC West contest.
