Statesmen score twice in 3rd period to top Bengals 3-1

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 2/4 Hobart College hockey team scored twice in the third period to defeat Buffalo State 3-1 in a non-league game played tonight at The Cooler. The Statesmen are now 11-0-2 overall, and the Bengals are 4-7-1.

Hobart extended its unbeaten streak to 13 games, which matches the longest unbeaten streak in Statesmen hockey history. The last time Hobart went unbeaten for 13 games was in the 2006-07 season. The Statesmen went 9-0-4 from Nov. 11, 2006, through Jan. 19, 2007.

Seven Statesmen earned a point in the victory. First-year Ben Gamache notched what proved to be the game-winner at 11:45 in the third period. Senior goalie Nick Broadwater played all 60 minutes in goal and stopped 36 shots.

First-year Mac Olson took advantage of Hobart's first power play to put the Statesmen up 1-0 with 5:16 left in the opening period. Senior Ryan Corcoran took the initial shot from the blue line. Senior Frank Salituro redirected the puck which then bounced off the Buffalo State goalie's pads and to Olson on the right post. Olson sent his shot into the back of the net for his fourth goal this season.

The Bengals evened the score with 2:56 left in the first. After each team was called for a penalty, another Statesman was called for tripping to give Buffalo State a 5-4 advantage. Anthony Orange capitalized after a pass from Ben Kramer. It was his first goal of the season.

Neither team could break the tie through the second period. The Bengals held a slight 12-11 advantage in shots in the middle stanza. Gamache put the Statesmen back on top at 11:45 in the third. Senior Mike White fired a shot from the blue line that Gamache tipped and it trickled under Buffalo State goalie Kevin Carr's pads. Salituro also earned an assist on the play.

With 54 seconds remaining in the game, the Bengals pulled Carr for the extra skater. They were unable to tie things back up. Instead, sophomore Brad McBride recorded an empty net goal for the final margin. Senior Harry Radovich earned the assist.

Carr finished with 36 saves in 59:06. The Statesmen held a slight 39-37 edge in total shots. Both Hobart and Buffalo State went 1-for-3 on the power play.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 8 when they host No. 2/3 Oswego in another non-league game at 7 p.m.
