#2/4 Hobart rallies from 2 goal deficit, but #2/3 Oswego comes away with 3-2 overtime win

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 2/4 Hobart hockey team rallied from a two-goal deficit, scoring two third period goals, including the game-tying goal in the final second of regulation, but No. 2/3 Oswego scored with 17 seconds remaining in overtime for a 3-2 non-league win tonight at The Cooler.

It was the first loss of the season for the Statesmen who are now 11-1-2 overall. The Lakers bounced back from two consecutive losses to improve to 9-2-0 this season. Hobart held a 46-43 edge in total shots.

Oswego got on the scoreboard just 1:39 into the contest. Chris Carr carried the puck into the zone from center ice, broke through the Hobart defense, and notched his third goal of the year to put the Lakers up 1-0. Denton King earned the assist.

With just over 7:30 left in the first, it appeared that the Statesmen had tied things up, but the goal was disallowed, as the puck was kicked into the net.

The Lakers came out strong again in the second period. Paul Rodrigues came onto the ice for another Oswego skater whose stick had broken. Just as he got on the ice, he took advantage of passes from Taylor Farris and Tyler Leimbrock and had a one-on-one with Hobart goalie, Nick Broadwater. Rodrigues lifted his shot over Broadwater to make it 2-0 just one minute into the second.

With 1:41 left in the third, the Statesmen broke through. Junior Tommy Fiorentino put the Statesmen on the board. Senior Cam Miller and sophomore Terrence O'Neill set up the play. It was Fiorentino's fifth goal this year. With 27 seconds remaining in regulation, one of the Statesmen and one of the Lakers were each called for roughing, forcing a 4-on-4 situation. Hobart pulled Broadwater for an extra skater to make it 5-on-4. Sophomore Robert Sovik pushed a pass across the front of the goal to senior Ryan Corcoran at the left post. Corcoran fired a shot into the back of the net just before time expired to send the game into overtime.

The Lakers held a 7-3 shot advantage in overtime. It seemed that the contest might end in a tie, but with 17 seconds left in the extra period, Chris Brown logged the game-winner for Oswego. In a flurry of action in front of the goal, Zach Josepher was able to get a pass to Brown who secured the win for the Lakers with his third goal of the season.

Broadwater finished with 40 saves in 63:06 in goal for the Statesmen. Andrew Hare stopped 44 shots in all 64:43. Each team went 0-for-2 on the power play.

The Statesmen will be back in action after the winter break. Hobart will travel to take on Curry in a non-league game on Jan. 12 at 4:35 p.m.
