Box Score ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team became the third squad in program history to post 20 wins in a season, defeating Bard 65-48 in a Liberty League contest tonight.
The Statesmen (20-4, 13-2) were led by sophomore
Richie Bonney, who had 15 points, and senior
Matt Pebole, who had 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Junior guard
Stefan Thompson added six points, six rebounds, and a game-high six assists without committing a turnover. Hobart shot 49 percent from the field for the game, and held Bard to 41 percent.
The Raptors got 15 points from senior Matt Shubert and 15 points and eight rebounds from first-year Siondueh Burnette.
Bard (5-19, 2-13) scored the first seven points of the game and led 9-2 before the Statesmen rattled off seven unanswered points to tie the game. Shubert converted a layup to briefly put the Raptors back in front, but Pebole scored the next five points to put Hobart in front for good.
The Statesmen carried a 33-26 lead into halftime. Bonney's layup five minutes into the second half gave Hobart a 10-point lead. From that point on, the Statesmen maintained a double digit advantage, leading by as many as 22.
The 2011-12 Statesmen are the fastest to 20 wins. The 2000-01 team and the 2010-11 teams both got their 20th win in their 27th game of the season.
Hobart, which has already secured the top seed in the four-team Liberty League Tournament, will close out the regular season at Vassar on Saturday, Feb. 18. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. Fans can follow the action online with
