Box Score CANTON, N.Y.—The St. Lawrence basketball team scored a 65-62 upset of Liberty League leading Hobart tonight. The hard-fought game featured seven lead changes and eight ties.
Hobart (15-4, 8-2) got off to a good start, using an 11-3 run to build its largest lead of the game.
Joe Gibbons and
Rezin Davis powered the surge with six and five points, respectively. St. Lawrence (12-8, 8-4) countered with a 19-4 run to reclaim the lead. Ralph Temgoua capped the run with a layup at the 2:51 mark for a 28-22 lead. Two minutes later, a 3-pointer by Statesman
Stefan Thompson tied the game at 30, but Temgoua sank a jumper just before the half for a 2-point St. Lawrence lead.
The second half was a tight battle from start to finish. Neither team led by more than two possessions.
Richie Bonney's layup with 7:43 remaining put Hobart ahead 55-52. Over the next three minutes, the Saints scored seven unanswered points to seize the lead for good.
Greg Stern halted the run with a 3-pointer that cut SLU's lead to 59-58, but for the rest of the night, Hobart got no closer.
Gibbons led the Statesmen with 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting.
Richie Bonney added 10 points and game-high seven rebounds while Stern and
Matt Pebole each finished with nine points. Hobart shot 47.1 percent from the floor, struggling from long range (5-of-22 3FG).
Temgoua led the Saints with 19 points and six rebounds. Garrett Sharlow chipped in 16 points and six boards and Terry Parham recorded 14 points. SLU shot 48.1 percent from the floor and 4-of-13 from deep.
The Statesmen return to the court at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, when they visit Clarkson (14-5, 7-3).
