Stern's 3-point shooting beats Union again

Box Score SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—The records were safe tonight, but senior guard Greg Stern's long range marksmanship once against propelled the Hobart College basketball team to a Liberty League victory over Union College. His trey with 1 second remaining lifted the Statesmen to a 62-60 victory at the Viniar Athletic Center.

Stern, who sank a school record 11 3-pointers when the teams played in Geneva last month, made just his second triple of the game to complete Hobart's biggest comeback of the season. It's the second time this season the Statesmen have wiped out a double-digit deficit to win. Hobart trailed Union by 11 on Jan. 10 (W 83-61).

Statesmen senior forward Matt Pebole shared game-high honors with 17 points. Junior guard Stefan Thompson added 11 points and four assists while sophomore forward Richie Bonney pulled down a game-high eight rebounds to go with 11 points.

Rusmir Dzanko led the Dutchmen with 17 points. Kevin Donohue and Terell Winney had 14 and 10 points, respectively. Joe Mason chipped in eight points, seven rebounds, and a game-high six assists.

Union (14-7, 7-6) dominated the first half, shooting 60 percent from the floor and holding Hobart to just 33.3 percent. The Dutchmen built their largest lead of the game, 22-8 with 8:37 left opening stanza. Union carried a 39-27 lead into the half.

The Dutchmen led 45-32 with 16:47 to play, but the Statesmen took their first lead of the night when Pebole's layup made it 48-47 with 9:05 left. That capped a 16-2 run in a span of 7:42. Bonney had six points during the surge. Hobart stretched its lead seven with 6:38 left, but the Dutchmen came back to claim a 58-57 lead with 1:29 to play. Sophomore guard Joe Gibbons made a layup at 1:01 for a 59-58 lead before Winney stepped to the line with 20 ticks on the clock. He made both to set up Stern's game-winner.

The Statesmen
improved to 17-4 overall (10-2 in the Liberty League). Hobart is in its 102nd varsity season and only three teams in that history have won more games in a season.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 10 when they host Skidmore. Tipoff in Bristol Gym is scheduled for 8 p.m.
