William Smith College Head Rowing Coach
Sandra Chu announced Lindsey Hochman will serve as an assistant coach for the Herons during the 2012-13 academic year. A graduate of Colgate University, Hochman is a three-time member of the U.S. Senior National Team.
“We are incredibly excited to add Lindsey to our staff,” Chu said. “She brings a wealth of competitive experience with her that will be an enormous asset to our program. Most importantly, Lindsey is passionate about coaching and the process required to master the sport of rowing—two components that are a perfect fit for our program. I'm really looking forward to seeing what touches she brings to the team's momentum.”
A bronze medalist in the lightweight women's quadruple sculls at the 2009 and 2011 World Rowing Championships, Hochman will compete in the event again at the 2012 World Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, next month.
“I am thrilled to be a part of such an exceptional program,” Hochman said. “Following a record-breaking year, I'm excited to help the team build off last season's success and achieve new goals. It's an exciting time to be a Heron and I am looking forward to joining the William Smith Community.”
Currently living in Seattle, Wash., Hochman began her coaching career at the Pocock Rowing Center, leading a team of 15 novice girls during the 2009-10 school year. Since February of 2011, she has served as the student cohort manager for Row to the Future, a youth development initiative of the George Pocock Foundation. The program uses rowing to inspire kids to be healthy, active members of their community.
Hochman graduated from Colgate with a bachelor's degree in English. The Dean's List student minored in film and media studies. As a varsity student-athlete for the Raiders, she was a two-time All-Patriot League selection and a 2007 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association All-Region second team pick. Hochman stroked the Colgate varsity eight as a senior, leading the crew to a third place finish in the Patriot League Championships and a sixth place finish in the ECAC Metro grand final.
William Smith is coming off one of the most successful seasons in school history. The Herons captured their second straight Liberty League Championship, put all four of its entries on the medal stand at the New York State Championships to win the NYS All-Point Trophy for the first time, earned a bronze medal at the ECAC NIRC and finished fourth as a team at the NCAA Championships, thanks to a third place finish by the varsity eight and a fifth place showing by the second varsity eight.
