Statesmen fall to Carnegie Mellon in season opener

Box Score Box Score

The Hobart College soccer team jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half, but fell to host Carnegie Mellon 3-1 in its season opener played during the Double Tree Invitational at CMU Soccer Field tonight.

Hobart went ahead in the game 1-0 when a player was fouled at the edge of the 18-yard box forcing a penalty kick in the 21st minute. First-year Marco Ronning slotted the shot past Tartan keeper Christopher Madden to the lower left post.

A free kick by senior Ben Bryant in the 23rd minute was punched away by Statesmen keeper sophomore Mike Lucas, before a Tartan could get a head on it, awarding a corner kick to the Tartans squad. Junior Scott Gerfen sent the corner kick to the far post where senior Moni Sallam met it for a header. Lucas was able to save the shot preventing the Tartans from equalizing.

The Tartans took control in the second half. In the 56th minute Matt Sarett connected after a pass from Max Tassano to tie up the game. Alex Abedian gave Carnegie Mellon the lead in the 79th minute after a corner kick sent into the box by Ben Bryant. With 4:59 left in the match, Tassano scored a goal of his own after a feed from Kevin Pierce to seal the win for the Tartans.

Carnegie Mellon held a 21-11 lead in shots, and a 6-5 edge in corners. Madden played all 90 minutes in goal for the Tartans and finished with three saves. Lucas played the entire game for Hobart and made seven stops.

The Statesmen will be back in action tomorrow, Sept. 1 when they play Baldwin-Wallace at Carnegie Mellon at 5 p.m.
