GENEVA, N.Y.--Three members of the William Smith soccer team scored their first collegiate goals as the Herons defeated Babson College 3-0 in the season opener for both teams and the second match of the 2012 Heron Cup played this afternoon on Cozzens Field.
Earlier this afternoon, No. 19 Ithaca edged the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 1-0 in the first match of the Heron Cup. William Smith will play the second game tomorrow, Sept. 1 at 4 p.m. when the Herons take on the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Ithaca will take on Babson in tomorrow's first game, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
The first half ended in a 0-0 tie, but the Herons, who are ranked No. 2 in the preseason NSCAA poll, dominated play, holding an 11-1 shot advantage after the first 90 minutes. In the 53rd minute, William Smith broke through, capitalizing on a corner kick. Senior

Olivia Zitoli tapped it in to make it 1-0. Just 2:03 later, the Herons made it 2-0 on another corner kick. This time, Jensen sent the ball in and sophomore

Caitlyn Mitchell who placed it into the back of the net.
In the 78th minute, junior
Danielle Moreau capped the Heron victory, firing a shot on goal that bounced off the right post and into the back of the net to make it 3-0.
Babson's best scoring chance came with 1:35 left in the contest. Jessica DiPhilippo broke through to get a shot on goal, but Heron goalie, junior
Chelsea Dunay, was there to immediately make the stop. With the save, Dunay clinched her first career shutout.
The Herons enjoyed a 23-3 advantage in shots and an 11-1 lead in corner kicks. The Beavers' goalie, Elizabeth Estabrook played all 90 minutes and finished with nine saves.
