Nationally ranked Herons host 5 matches this week

Complete NFHCA Poll

The William Smith College field hockey team remained nationally ranked this week, coming in at No. 19 in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll. The Herons will host five matches on McCooey Field this week, taking on Geneseo on Wednesday night and hosting the William Smith Classic on Saturday and Sunday.

On Sept. 12, the Herons (1-1) aim to rebound from their first setback of the year, a 4-3 loss to Oneonta on Sept. 8, when the Blue Knights (1-2) travel to Geneva. Geneseo is looking to put the brakes on a two-game slide following a 6-0 loss to No. 2 Salisbury and a 4-1 loss to No. 20 Rochester. William Smith is 13-1 all-time against the Blue Knights. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

The four-team field for the William Smith Classic includes the Herons, Lebanon Valley (0-3), Manhattanville (3-2), and St. Lawrence (0-3). The action begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, when William Smith takes on the Valiants. The Herons are unbeaten in five matches against Manhattanville. At 4 p.m., the Saints and Dutchmen will square off.

On Sunday, Sept. 16, St. Lawrence and Manattanville will play at 1 p.m. With William Smith and Lebanon Valley following at 3 p.m. The Herons are 10-8 all-time against the Dutchmen, but LVC has won the past four meetings.
