Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College junior forward
Amy David scored a pair of goals to lead the 19th-ranked Herons to a 4-0 victory over SUNY Geneseo on McCooey Field tonight. The Herons improve to 2-1 while the Blue Knights fall to 1-3.
The first half was a back-and-forth struggle with neither team able to gain much traction. William Smith finally broke through in the 28th minute when junior forward
Julia Simmons fired a crossing pass from the right wing to David on the back post for a 1-0 lead that stood up through halftime.
After the break, the Herons needed just 46 seconds to add to their lead. This time first-year midfielder
Madison Finn let a shot fly from the top of the circle. It deflected off a defenders stick into the lower left corner of the cage for a 2-0 William Smith lead. In the 53rd minute, senior
Annie Kietzman got off a zero angle shot from the left side of the cage that found its way through traffic for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. David finished off the scoring with a near instant replay of her first goal. Kietzman earned the assist with the cross from the right to the back post and David's waiting stick.
The Herons dominated play in the second half, outshooting the Blue Knights 11-1 (18-5 for the game). William Smith also owned a 9-6 advantage in penalty corners.
Sophomore goalie
Catherine Hare made three saves to earn the shutout. Geneseo starter Caitlyn Dowell made two saves on five shots in 52:27.
The Herons will be back in action at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, when they host Manhattanville in the first game of the annual William Smith Classic. Geneseo is off for a week before traveling to Utica on Sept. 19.
