#1 Herons edge Bengals 3-2

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 1 William Smith soccer team edged visiting Buffalo State 3-2 in a non-league match played on Cozzens Field this afternoon. Senior Renee Jensen led the Herons with a goal and an assist.

William Smith (4-0-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead very early in the first half. Just 5:58 into the match, Jensen sent a crossing pass from the left side to find sophomore Madeline Buckley who fired a shot just inside the left post. Buckley now leads the Herons with five goals this season. Just 32 seconds later, Jensen notched a goal of her own. After a Heron free kick, Frary set up Jensen to make it 2-0. It was Jensen's third goal this season. She has recorded at least two points in all five matches this year.

The Bengals (0-5-0) did not take long to answer. In the 13th minute, Taylor Volkman fed Paula Jones who broke through the defense to score from right in front of the goal to get Buffalo State within one. In the 26th minute, the Bengals earned a corner kick. Jordan Dudish launched the ball into the box. Jenna Lynn tapped it over to Shannon Yokopovich who tied the game at two.

The Herons came out much stronger in the second half. Just 1:52 into the period, first-year Mason O'Brien scored what proved to be the game-winner for William Smith. Classmate Kathryn Busa pushed a short pass to O'Brien who logged her first collegiate goal to secure the victory for the Herons. William Smith outshot the Bengals 16-1 in the second half including two shots that hit the post and one that was saved on a header by a Buffalo State defender.

William Smith held a 21-6 overall advantage in shots and a 6-1 lead in corner kicks. Junior Chelsea Dunay played all 90 minutes in goal for the Herons and stopped two shots. Linda Banfield played the entire match in goal for the Bengals and made eight saves.

William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 15, when they host Fredonia State for another non-league match beginning at 2 p.m.
