Dougherty, Coleman lead #14 Hobart to 45-26 win at Utica

Box Score Hobart College senior running back Bobby Dougherty rushed for a career-high 174 yards and three touchdowns and the Statesmen defense recorded 10 sacks in a 45-26 victory at Utica College tonight. Sophomore defense end Tyre Coleman led the charge, with Hobart game records for sacks (4.5) and tackles for a loss (4.5).
 
Hobart (3-0) struck first with a nine-play, 55-yard drive that senior Bobby Dougherty finished off with a 6-yard run. The key play of the drive was a 34-yard completion from senior quarterback Nick Strang to senior wide receiver Junior Woodard on third down and 27.
 
Utica (2-1) got on the board with 2:29 left in the first quarter on a 36-yard pass from Andrew Benkwitt to Jeremy Meier.
 
Strang directed a pair of second quarter touchdown drives. The first was an 11-play, 74-yard march that ended with a 12-yard TD reception by junior wide receiver Yosh Karbownicz. The second drive covered just 40 yards with Strang covering the final 2 yards on the ground for his third touchdown of the season and a 21-7 halftime lead.
 
The third quarter featured four touchdowns and a field goal. First-year kicker James Hull booted a 25-yard field on Hobart's opening drive. Utica countered with a 51-yard scoring pass from Paul Smith to Meier. A Statesmen fumble gave the ball back to the Pioneers. Six plays and 61 yards later, Benkwitt completed a 30-yard pass to Jamie Murphy to make it a 24-20 game. The extra point was blocked.
 
Hobart answered the threat with a 7-play, 67-yard drive. Woodard pulled in a 5-yard pass from Strang to put the Statesmen up 31-20.
 
Another Hobart fumble led to a 16-yard touchdown pass from Benkwitt to Meier, leaving the Statesmen a 31-26 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
 
In the final 15 minutes, Hobart rushed for 119 yards and held the ball for just over nine minutes, while Utica managed just 31 yards, including minus 17 on the ground.
 
Dougherty put the game out of reach with a 59-yard TD run with 6:52 remaining and capped his day with an 18-yard run with 74 seconds left.
 
On the other side of the ball, Coleman made all four of his final quarter tackles behind the line of scrimmage, including three sacks. Senior defensive tackle Nick Auriemma, first-year defensive tackle Tucker Gumkowski and junior linebacker Devin Worthington combined for three more sacks in the fourth quarter.
 
Overall, Hobart outgained Utica 502-377, including 218-13 on the ground. Strang finished the night 16-of-26 for 284 yards. Junior Woodard and Yosh Karbowniczak each caught six passes for 161 and 61 yards, respectively.
 
Benkwitt threw for 313 yards and three touchdowns, but was intercepted by first-year defensive end Mark Guarino-Hyde in the second quarter. Meier caught a game-high nine passes for 160 yards and two TDs.
 
Sophomore linebacker Nolan Toran had a team-high eight tackles for Hobart while Coleman, senior Andrew Klindera, and Devin Worthington each posted seven stops.
 
Utica got a game-high 14 tackles from junior linebacker Dana Christofferson.
 
The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 22, when they return to Boswell Field for Homecoming against Merchant Marine. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. The game will be televised by Time Warner Cable Sports of Central New York.
