Hobart wins 4th straight, tops Utica 1-0

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team earned its fourth straight win, defeating Utica College 1-0 in a non-league match played this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Statesmen improve to 4-1-0, while the Pioneers fall to 4-3-0.

Senior Caetano Sanchez scored the game-winning goal in the 57th minute. Classmate Will Abbott tipped a short pass to Sanchez who fired a shot just inside the left post. It was Sanchez's first goal this season.

Sophomore goalie Mike Lucas played all 90 minutes for the Statesmen and stopped four shots to earn his third shutout.

Utica had its best scoring chance with just over nine minutes remaining in the match. Jonathan Peterson broke through the defense for a one-on-one with Hobart goalie, Mike Lucas. Lucas came out of the goal, diving on the ball, but he could not hang on to it. As it slipped out of his hands, DJ Ilebani collected the ball and fired a shot at the open net, but it sailed wide right. The Pioneers also earned three straight corner kicks with under four minutes remaining, but each attempted was immediately cleared by the Statesmen defense.

Hobart enjoyed an 18-10 advantage in shots. Each team earned five corner kicks. Anthony Caruso played all 90 minutes in goal for Utica and finished with six saves.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 22, when they host Clarkson for their first Liberty League match of the season.
