Buckley scores in 108th minute, Herons edge Rochester 2-1 in double overtime

Box Score The No. 10 William Smith soccer team slid past the University of Rochester 2-1 in double overtime in a non-league match played this evening in Rochester, N.Y. Sophomore Madeline Buckley scored both of the Herons' goals.

William Smith improves to 5-1-1 overall and the Yellowjackets fall to 1-6-0 overall.

Buckley notched the game-winner with two minutes remaining in the second overtime period. Senior Renee Jensen sent a corner kick into the box, finding Buckley at the back post. She settled it, picked her spot, and drove it inside the right post to win the game. Buckley leads William Smith with seven goals this season, and Jensen leads the team with eight assists.

Rochester struck first just 7:32 into the match. Morgan O'Brien fired a shot into the top right corner of the net from 25 yards out to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead.

Bridget Lang made four first-half saves for Rochester, the biggest with just over 14:30 left in the half. A corner kick from Jensen found sophomore Caitlyn Mitchell on the left side of the box. She headed the ball towards the left post. Lang was leaning towards the center, but dove back and made a sprawling save on the end line. She finished with seven saves.

Buckley netted the equalizer in the 64th minute. First-year Zoe Jackson Gibson sent a long crossing pass into the box, which Buckley redirected into the goal on a header, tying to match at one.

Lang produced the save of the match as the Herons threatened in the closing minute. Sophomore Brenna Kincaid pressed up on right wing and rifled the ball from the right edge of the penalty area towards the near post. Lang was able to punch it over the bar for a corner kick – which the Herons were uable to capitalize on.

The Herons held a 19-7 advantage in shots and a 10-3 lead in corner kicks. Junior Chelsea Dunay played all 108 minutes in goal for William Smith and finished with two saves. 

The Herons will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 22, when the travel to take on Clarkson in their first Liberty League match of the season.
