#15 Herons double up Golden Flyers to extend win streak

Box Score The William Smith College field hockey team, ranked 15th in this week's NFHCA poll, doubled up Nazareth College 4-2 in Pittsford, N.Y., to earn its sixth consecutive win tonight. The Herons defeated the Golden Flyers for the 12th time in as many meetings.

William Smith (7-1) got two goals and an assist from senior forward Annie Kietzman and a goal and an assist from junior midfielder Melanie O'Connor. Junior forward Taylor Cappello also scored a goal and first-year Madison Finn chipped in an assist.

Kailee O'Hara scored both goals for Nazareth (1-7). Tessa Knapp recorded an assist.

O'Connor opened the scoring with an unassisted tally in the seventh minute. Just three minutes later, O'Hara evened the match and it stayed that way through halftime.

After the break, the Herons broke the contest open with three straight goals to build a 4-1 lead. Kietzman, assisted by O'Connor, started the run with a penalty corner goal in the 46th minute. Nine minutes later, Kietzman sticked home her team-leading 11th goal of the year, finishing a feed from Finn. Cappello capped the run, driving a Kietzman pass into the cage in the 67th minute.

O'Hara's second goal came with just two seconds remaining in the match.

William Smith sophomore goalie Catherine Hare earned the win with four saves. Nazareth's Shannon Winney made 11 saves.

Kietzman's five-point performance raised her career total to 106, ninth on the Heron career list. Her 12th assist of the season moved her into a tie for seventh on the school's season list, five shy of Liz Saucier's six-year-old record with nine games remaining in the regular season.

William Smith returns to Liberty League play at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, when the Herons travel to Union College.
