Engineers top Herons 2-0

Box Score The Rensselaer women's soccer team scored two first half goals on its way to a 2-0 victory over No. 10 William Smith in a Liberty League game played at ECAV Stadium this afternoon.

RPI has now won four straight games to improve to 6-3-0 overall. It is 2-0-0 in the league. The Herons fall to 6-2-1 and 1-1-0.

The Engineers opened the scoring when junior Sara Rothschild collected a loose ball and scored from 16 yards out just 8:25 into the contest. Shannon Maguire began the play with a through-ball that could not be controlled by either a William Smith defender or the goalkeeper and Rothschild took advantage, scoring her fifth goal of the season.

Maguire made it 2-0 when she scored on a hard shot into the top of the left corner from 35 yards out. The Herons' junior keeper Chelsea Dunay dove for the ball and got her hand on it but could not keep it out of the goal. It was Maguire's second of the year.

The Engineers had a solid chance to make it a 3-0 game early in the second half when sophomore Taylor Korytko headed the ball off the post and then saw her rebound, also a header, get stopped by Dunay. William Smith's best opportunity came just minutes later when one of their shots was blocked out of bounds, leading to a corner kick.

RPI goalkeeper Steph Vargas made two saves, while Dunay stopped three shots. The Engineers held a 14-11 edge in shots and a 5-2 lead in corners.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday afternoon for league contests. The Engineers host Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) at 2 p.m., while the Herons are at Skidmore College at  2 p.m.
