#10 Herons edge Skidmore 1-0

Box Score William Smith senior Renee Jensen scored in the 71st minute to give the Heron soccer team a 1-0 Liberty League win over Skidmore College this afternoon at Wachenheim Field.

The Thoroughbreds drop to 1-7-1 and 0-3-1 in Liberty League play, while the 10th ranked Herons improve to 7-2-1 and 2-1-0 in conference action. The win marked the 450th career victory for Head Coach Aliceann Wilber.

Both teams had chances early. Skidmore's Rebecca Russo had an opportunity off a corner that junior Olivia Zitoli blocked in front of an open net for the Herons in the 12th minute.  William Smith's best opportunity of the half came in the 21st minute off a restart at the top of the box. Senior Whitney Frary drilled a shot that Thoroughbred goalie Gab Lawrence saved and then alertly corralled the rebound from two Heron attackers.

William Smith broke through when Jensen scored her fourth of the season at 70:53 from just inside the left side of the box for the 1-0 lead. Jensen shares the team-lead with 16 points this fall.

Lawrence finished with eight saves for the Thoroughbreds, while junior Chelsea Dunay had one save for William Smith. It's Dunay's fourth shutout of the season. The Herons had a 10-5 shot and 5-3 corner advantage.

William Smith will be back on the pitch on Wednesday, Oct. 3, when the Herons host RIT for a Liberty League contest at 4:30 p.m.
