Statesmen blank Brockport 3-0 for first win of season

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College senior Alex Kittelberger led the Statesmen soccer team with a goal and an assist as Hobart defeated visiting Brockport 3-0 in a non-league match played on Boswell Field at the Caird Center for Sports and Recreation this afternoon.

The match was originally scheduled to be played at 2 p.m. on Cozzens Field, however, torrential rain and unsafe field conditions forced the game to be moved and postponed until 3:30 p.m. The Statesmen are now 1-1-0 this season, while Brockport is now 1-3-0 overall.

In the 36th minute, Hobart was awarded a corner kick. Senior Taylor Jones sent the ball into the box, and in the flurry of action in front of the goal, one of the Golden Eagles put the ball into the back of his own net to give the Statesmen a 1-0 lead.

The Hobart offense continued to capitalize in the second half. In the 64th minute, Kittelberger fired a shot on goal that the Brockport keeper, Max Drexler, stopped, but could not hang on to. Senior Will Abbott was there to finish, notching his first goal of the year to make it 2-0. With 2:41 remaining in the match, Kittelberger tallied a goal of his own. He broke through the Golden Eagle defense creating a 2-on-1 with the Brockport goalie. Kittelberger faked the Drexler to go right and sent his shot inside the left post.

Sophomore goalie, Mike Lucas, played all 90 minutes and finished with three saves to earn his first collegiate victory and first collegiate shutout. Drexler played the entire game in goal for Brockport and stopped seven shots.

Hobart enjoyed a 22-6 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Monday, Sept. 10, when they travel to take on St. John Fisher in another non-league match.
