Basketball coaches donning sneakers in fight against cancer

Hobart College Head Coach Mike Neer and his assistant coaches are participating in the National Association of Basketball Coaches Suits and Sneakers Weekend. Part of the NABC's Coaches vs. Cancer initiative, Suits and Sneakers raises awareness about the fight against cancer.

Hobart (9-6, 5-1 Liberty League) hosts Bard (4-11, 1-7) at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25 and Vassar (5-10, 1-5) at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26.

William Smith College (10-6, 4-3) hosts the Raptors (7-10, 1-7) and Brewers (12-3, 4-2) this weekend as well, beginning at 6 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively. In a show of support, the Herons' coaches will also don sneakers in the fight against cancer.

This year, the NABC is giving fans a chance to get in on the action. When you donate $5 to Coaches vs. Cancer by texting the word “COACH” to 20222 or donating online any time between January 21 and April 9, you'll be entered for a chance to experience the thrill of college basketball as a true insider. Prizes include a courtside experience at the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic and exclusive merchandise.

The Coaches vs. Cancer program empowers coaches, their teams, and communities to join the fight against cancer by participating in awareness efforts, advocacy programs, and fundraising activities. Coaches vs. Cancer have raised more than $87 million to help the American Cancer Society's mission.

Next month, William Smith will participate in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's annual Play 4Kay initiative which raises breast cancer awareness and funds for research.
