Traversa scores twice as #5 Statesmen top Elmira 4-1

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College sophomore Tommaso Traversa logged two goals as the No. 5 Statesmen defeated Elmira 4-1 in an ECAC West game played tonight at The Cooler. Junior Tommy Fiorentino and senior Harry Radovich each earned two assists in the victory.

Senior goalie Nick Broadwater played 59:54 and finished with 30 saves for Hobart. The Statesmen now 15-2-2 overall and 7-1-1 in the ECAC West. The Soaring Eagles are 8-11-0 and 3-6-0 in conference play.

The first period ended in a 0-0 tie. The Statesmen came close to scoring a power play late in the period, taking a number of shots from right in front, however Elmira goalie, Ryan de Melo stopped all 13 shots he faced in the opening stanza. The Statesmen held a slight 13-12 advantage in shots in the first.

Hobart scored two goals early in the second. Fiorentino got the puck on the left side at the blue line and pushed a short pass ahead to Traversa. At 2:32, Traversa placed his shot inside the far post to give the Statesmen a 1-0 lead. Radovich also earned an assist on the play. Hobart was able to capitalize on a five minute penalty called on Elmira scoring their second goal of the night at 6:50 in. After a series of passes around the zone with the last two coming from sophomores Ryan Michel and Terrence O'Neill, senior Brad Richard blasted a shot into the back of the net, tallying his third goal this season.

The Soaring Eagles took advantage of their own power play with 6:28 left in the middle period. Brian Depp put a shot on goal, but Broadwater made the save with his pads. The rebound bounced out to Jesper Strale who found the back of the net to make it 2-1. Eric David also logged an assist.

Hobart stretched its lead to 3-1 at 11:28 in the third period. Traversa scored his fifth goal of the season, tapping in the puck from right in front. Once again, Fiorentino and Radovich earned the assists. The Soaring Eagles pulled de Melo for the extra skater with 1:09 left in regulation, but they could not score. Instead, first-year Mac Olson capped the victory for Hobart with an empty net goal with 28 seconds left in the game. It was his sixth goal this year.

deMelo finished with 40 saves in goal for Elmira. The Statesmen went 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Soaring Eagles were 1-for-3. Hobart finished with a 44-31 advantage in shots.

The Statesmen and the Soaring Eagles will meet again tomorrow, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m., in Elmira.
