NFHCA Coaches Poll
William Smith College moved up two spots to No. 3 in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll. The Herons are one of 10 undefeated teams remaining in NCAA Division III field hockey.

This is the highest national ranking in the NFHCA poll for the Herons, since they were No. 2 in October of 2001. At 9-0, William Smith is off to its best start to a season since winning its first 16 matches in 1995.

The defending Liberty League champions, the Herons opened conference play this past weekend, defeating Rensselaer 3-1 and Vassar 2-1 in overtime. Four seniors top the team in points, led by
Taylor Cappello's 21 (8-5). Classmates
Melanie O'Connor (6-7-19),
Julia Simmons (6-0-12), and
Margaret McConnell (4-2-10) have also reached double digits in points. All four student-athletes are ranked in the top 10 in the conference in points.

First-year goalie
Amy Feda has started all eight matches she's played, producing a 7-0 record, a 1.62 goals against average (3rd in the league), and a .667 save percentage.

William Smith will host Union (2-6, 0-1) on Saturday, Oct. 5. The Liberty League match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on McCooey Field. The Herons are 19-2 against the Dutchwomen since the conference was founded as the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association in 1995.

Sally Scatton, now in her 26th season at William Smith, enters the match with a 399-121-3 record with the Herons. She also spent one season as the head coach at Wells College and has an overall coaching record of 402-132-4.
