#16 Yellowjackets upset #4 Herons 3-1

Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The University of Rochester opened up a 2-0 lead early in its match against William Smith College on its way to a 3-1 upset in a Liberty League field hockey showdown of nationally ranked teams.

Fifty-five seconds into the match Callie Fisher finished off a scramble in front of the Heron cage for the early lead. The tally was her seventh of the season, assisted by Michelle Relin. In the 21st minute, the 16th-ranked Yellowjackets added to their lead when Gina Cunningham scored off a setup by Lindsay Randall.

The fourth-ranked Herons nearly cracked the scoring column in the 22nd minute, but Rochester defender Kathryn Montgomery's defensive save at the back post kept the visitor's scoreless. William Smith finally got on the board in the 28th minute via a penalty corner. Senior Margaret McConnell fired a shot on frame that first-year Alessandra Patrizio tipped past UR goalie Madison Wagner (W, 5 saves, 35:00).

After the Yellowjackets (12-2, 4-0) controlled the momentum in the opening 20 minutes, the Herons (10-1, 3-1) carried the play heading into halftime, but were unable to equalize. William Smith had a 13-7 edge in shots and a 10-2 advantage in penalty corners in the opening 35 minutes.

Rochester added an insurance goal in the 44th minute when Relin unleashed a rocket from the middle of the circle for her 14th goal of the year. Four minutes later, Heron first-year Cydney Conley was robbed of a goal by Sayaka Abe's defensive save that steered the shot just outside the far post.

William Smith produced four more shots on goal in the waning minutes, but could not solve goalie Tara Lamberti, who made five saves in the second half. Second half shots were even (9-9) while Rochester owned a 10-5 advantage in penalty corners.

The loss is the Herons' first of the season and just their second to Rochester since the Liberty League was founded in 1995.

William Smith will look to bounce back on Tuesday, Oct. 15, when the Herons visit Ithaca (7-4) for a 5 p.m. non-conference match.
