3 Statesmen score as Hobart downs Clarkson 3-0

Box Score Three different Statesmen scored as the Hobart College soccer team downed Clarkson 3-0 in a Liberty League match played on the Golden Knights' Hantz Turf Field this afternoon. Sophomore Tyler Terens led the Statesmen effort with a goal and an assist.

The Statesmen improve to 9-7-1 and 2-4-1  in the Liberty League. The Golden Knights fall to 3-11-0 and 1-6-0 in conference play.

After a back-and-forth first few minutes, Hobart was able to get behind the Clarkson backline. First-year Charlie Kelly took the ball up the middle and passed left to Terens, who kicked a hard ground ball to the far right corner of the goal and past a the Golden Knights diving goalkeeper Michael King to put the Statesmen up 1-0.

Tempo was controlled by the Golden Knights following the goal, and although they did not have many shots on goal, they found themselves playing on the attacking end for much of the first half. One of their best chances came when Zachary Godin took a corner kick and found Trevor Blackwell, but his shot sailed wide of the net.

Late in the first half Hobart struck again, as first-year Charlie Kelly took a pass from classmate Carl Weiss in the middle of the field and fired a line drive by a diving King to put the Statesmen up 2-0 going into halftime. Kelly leads the Statesmen with 10 goals and 22 points this season.

Early in the second half Hobart had another chance to add to the lead, but King came out and broke up a one-on-one bid to keep the game 2-0. The Statesmen upped the pressure and King made three of his four saves in the second half. Hobart would strike again in the 56th minute. Sophomore DJ Clark chipped in a point blank shot after a corner taken by Terens.

The Statesmen outshot Clarkson 16-8 on the afternoon. The Golden Knights held a 6-4 edge in corners. Junior goalie Mike Lucas played the opening 73:49 and made one save. Sophomore Tyler Serafine came in for the final 16:11 and made one stop. King played all 90 minutes in goal for Clarkson.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 29, when they host Fredonia for a non-league game at 4 p.m.
