Patrizio honored by league; Herons to host charity game

William Smith College first-year Alessandra Patrizio was named the Liberty League Field Hockey Rookie of the Week by the conference office today. She recorded a goal and two assists in a 1-1 week for the Herons.

On Friday, Patrizio scored the second William Smith goal and assisted on the third in a 3-1 win at St. Lawrence that clinched a Liberty League playoff berth. On Saturday at Skidmore, Patrizio assisted on the first William Smith goal in a 3-2 setback.

In 13 games, including three starts, Patrizio has five goals and two assists this season. She is the only non-senior in the top five on the Heron roster in points. Patrizio is fifth with 12.

This is the second time this month that Patrizio has been named the league's Rookie of the Week.

William Smith (12-3) will play its final regular season home game on Wednesday, Oct. 30, when the Herons host Nazareth on McCooey Field at 5 p.m. WHWS-FM (105.7) will broadcast the match live. Fans can also follow the action online with All-Access video and Live Stats.

All month long, William Smith teams have been wearing pink (shoelaces, swim caps, socks, ribbons, etc.) in support of breast cancer awareness month. The field hockey Herons will don special pink jerseys during Wednesday's match against the Golden Flyers and ask fans to make a donation to Embrace Your Sisters, an Ontario County based nonprofit organization that provides short-term, emergency financial assistance to people diagnosed with breast cancer.

Over the past seven years, William Smith athletics has made donations to Embrace Your Sisters, totaling more than $15,000. And, in the decade prior to that, the Herons raised over $30,000 for various breast cancer charities.
