Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College first-year
Joe Busuttil led the Statesmen soccer team with four points as Hobart downed Bard 6-0 in a Liberty League match played on Cozzens Field this afternoon. The Statesmen are now 6-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play. The Raptors fall to 2-10-0 and 0-3-0 in the Liberty League.
Busuttil chipped in two goals. First-year
JP White produced a goal and an assist. Seven Statesmen earned a point in the match. First-years
Charlie Kelly and
Sean Barry as well as sophomore
DJ Clark each chipped in goals for Hobart. Sophomore goalie
Tyler Serafine started the match and played 55:57. Senior
Mark Benya came in for the final 34:03 and made one save.
Just 10:52 in, White notched his first collegiate goal. He put an initial shot on goal that was saved by Bard goalie, Daniel Gagne, but the rebound bounced back out to White, and he was able to capitalize the second time. At 14:58, White set up classmate Busuttil for his first goal as a Statesman. Kelly made it 3-0 in the 25th minute. He stifled an attempt by a Raptor defender to clear the ball out of the box, and sent home his team-leading sixth goal this season.
Busuttil struck again in the 28th minute. He took a short pass from sophomore
Tyler Niles and fired on goal. Busuttil's shot banged off the inside of the left post and into the back of the net, giving Hobart a 4-0 lead at halftime.
In the 82nd minute, Clark took a long pass from sophomore
Chris Poggi and fired into the left side of the goal to make it 5-0. It was also Clark's first collegiate goal. Barry tallied his second goal of the season after a pass from sophomore
Kyle Wiatrowski in the 87th minute.
Bard's best scoring chance came in the 85th minute, when Christian Letourneau blasted a shot on goal off a free kick from about 15 yards outside of the box. It sailed all the way to Benya who came up with the save for Hobart.
Gagne finished with 11 saves in all 90 minutes in goal for Bard. The Statesmen recorded a 32-2 advantage in total shots and an 11-2 lead in corners.
The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 12, when they travel to take on Union in a Liberty League match at 2 p.m.
