Statesmen cruise to 6-2 victory over Nazareth

Box Score The Hobart College soccer team breezed to a 6-2 victory over host Nazareth in a non-league match played this afternoon in Pittsford, N.Y. First-year Charlie Kelly led the Statesmen with three goals and an assist.

Hobart is now 7-4-1 overall, while the Golden Flyers fall to 4-7-0 this season.

Junior Bernard Abagali chipped in two goals and an assist and first-year Josh Vendetta notched his first collegiate goal. Junior goalie Mike Lucas played the opening 68:35 and finished with one save. Sophomore Tyler Serafine came in for the final 21:25 and stopped two shots.

Abagali had a hand in Hobart's first three goals. He gave the Statesmen a 1-0 advantage with an unassisted tally just 3:40 in. Nazareth's Lucas Bennett answered after a pass from Jason Renfro in the 18th minute. At 25:15, Abagali set up Charlie Kelly to take back the lead for Hobart. In the 32nd minute, Abagali struck again this time after a feed from Kelly to make it 3-1.

The Golden Flyers scored first in the second half, cutting their deficit to one. Alessio DeMichele found the back of the net in the 55th minute. Luke Elston set up the play.

However, this was as close as Nazareth would get, as the Statesmen then rattled off three unanswered goals. In the 63rd minute, Vendetta produced the first goal of his Hobart career to make it 4-2. Charlie Kelly followed with back-to-back goals 1:33 apart for the final. He chipped in his second tally of the day in the 68th minute, and then capitalized on a feed from sophomore Zico Gaeffke in the 69th minute. Kelly leads the Statesmen with nine goals and 20 points this season.

Hobart held a 22-13 advantage in shots and a 5-2 lead in corners. J.P. Horan played the opening 54:13 in goal for the Golden Flyers and made three saves. Nate Pipic came in for the final 35:47 and also stopped three shots.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 12, when they travel to Union for a Liberty League match at 2 p.m.
