Statesmen open season with 5-0 win over Manhattanville

Box Score GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 9 Hobart College hockey team opened the season with a 5-0 win over visiting Manhattanville in an ECAC West game played at The Cooler tonight. First-year Nick Bingaman led the Statesmen with two goals and an assist in his first collegiate game.

Junior Terrence O'Neill produced two assists and senior Tommy Fiorentino chipped in a goal and an assist in the win. Sophomore goalie Lino Chimienti played all 60 minutes and stopped all 26 shots that he faced to secure his first collegiate shutout in just his second career start.

The Statesmen got on the scoreboard at 10:05 in the first period. Bingaman took Hobart's first shot of the game and roofed it into the top right corner. First-year Carl Belizario earned his first collegiate point with the assist.

Hobart added two more goals in the second period to take a 3-0 lead. Bingaman struck again at 10:40. This time he took a pass from O'Neill, deked around a defenseman and slid a shot past the Valiant goalie. With 13 seconds left in the middle period, O'Neill blasted a shot on goal that bounced off the goalie's pads. Fiorentino was there to collect the rebound and put a hard shot into the back of the net.

The Statesmen continued to pad their lead with two more goals in the third. At 7:29, junior Robert Sovik sent a pass across ice, which sophomore Ben Gamache tipped in to give Hobart a 4-0 advantage. Just under three minutes later, Bingaman put another shot on goal that was saved, but first-year Jon Neal was able to one-time the rebound into the goal for his first collegiate tally. Bingaman and first-year Tyler Hanzlik were credited with the assists.

The Valiants (0-1-0, 0-1-0) were inches away from scoring on a few occasions. With six minutes left in the second period, Adam Platt banged a shot off the crossbar. With about three minutes to go in the third, Matt Coleman drilled a shot that hit the pipe.

The Statesmen went 2-for-6 on the power play, and killed all eight of the Valiants power-play attempts. Hobart held a 27-26 edge in shots. Alex Scola played all 60 minutes in goal for Manhattanville and finished with 22 saves.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 2, when they host No. 14 Neumann for another ECAC West game at 7 p.m.
