#10 Herons shut out #19 Yellowjackets to reach Liberty League title tilt

Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y.—In the semifinals of the Liberty League Field Hockey Tournament, 10th-ranked William Smith College pitched a shutout at Fauver Stadium, defeating the No. 19 University of Rochester 3-0 tonight. First-year goalie Amy Feda made five saves to preserve the clean sheet.

First-year Alessandra Patrizio scored the game-winning goal and senior Julia Simmons added a pair of insurance goals. Senior Amy David added an assist.

The Herons and Yellowjackets tied for second in the Liberty League regular season standings, but UR earned the No. 2 seed thanks to a 3-1 win over William Smith during the regular season.

Rochester (14-6) had the night's first scoring chance. Feda made a stick save on a high-arcing shot in the ninth minute, keeping the match scoreless. William Smith (15-3) broke out of its defensive zone and worked the ball down the field, where Patrizio slotted a shot just inside the left post for a 1-0 lead 11:14 into the match.

In the 21st minute, Simmons added to the visitor's lead, popping a shot over goalie Tara Lamberti to make it a two-goal match.

Feda made her second stop on a low, hard shot from the right slot in the 25th minute, sending the Herons into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

Shots were even through the first 35 minutes, but William Smith dramatically turned up the pressure in the second half, finishing the match with a 26-13 advantage. The Herons also enjoyed an 11-5 edge in penalty corners.

Early in the second half, Rochester missed out on a pair of prime scoring opportunities. On a 37th minute penalty corner, the Yellowjackets but the ball in the cage, but the shot was ruled too high and the would-be goal waived off. Six minutes later, Rochester hit the post.

In the 42nd minute, William Smith was unable to convert a penalty stroke, but in the 45th minute, David fired a shot across the mouth of the goal that Simmons tipped in for her 10th goal of the season and a 3-0 lead. The Herons hit the back of the cage twice more, but both shots were waived off by the officials. Patrizio had the last, quality scoring chance of the night, but a defensive save by Katie Flaschner preserved the three-goal margin.

It was Feda's first career shutout and the first time Rochester has been shut out at home since Sept. 3, 2008, a string of 64 games.

The Yellowjackets started Madison Wagner in goal. She made one save and allowed one goal in 16:25. Lamberti came on in relief and recorded 17 saves.

William Smith will face No. 12 Skidmore (16-3) in the Liberty League Championship match on Saturday, Nov. 9. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

The Thoroughbreds won the regular season meeting against the Herons 3-2 on Oct. 26, also in Saratoga Springs.
