Richie Bonney produced his fourth straight double-double, but SUNY Geneseo defeated the Statesmen 82-73 in the fifth place game of the Wendy's College Classic at St. John Fisher's Wanzer Court. The Knights improve to 4-1 on the year, while Hobart slips to 4-2.
The Statesmen held the statistical edge in points off turnovers (16-13), points in the paint (32-28), and second chance points (14-2), but could not overcome its deficit in bench scoring (26-4).
Connor Fedge gave Geneseo 22 points and a game-high five assists off the bench. Geneseo starter Gordon Lyons added 19 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Starters James McKenna and Matt Curry added 18 and 13 points, respectively.
Bonney matched Fedge's game-high 22 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and blocked two shots.
Connor Rehbaum scored 17 points,
Trey Blanding added 13 points and
Joe Gibbons notched 12 points. Rehbaum made three of Hobart's five 3-pointers. He and
Andrew Hoy shared team-high honors with four assists each.
Geneseo needed just nine minutes to build a double digit lead and carried its largest lead of the contest into halftime, 46-28, thanks to a trey by Curry. The Knights shot 57.1 percent from the floor, including 6-of-10 from beyond the arc, in the opening 20 minutes while limiting the Statesmen to 40.6 percent.
Hobart twice whittled its deficit down to 5 in the final six minutes of the contest, but each time Geneseo countered with the game's next four points to quell the threat. The Knights finished the game 22-of-24 a the free throw line while shooting 56.5 percent with eight 3s. The Statesmen got just 10 trips to the line, making eight, and shooting 43.5 percent with five treys.
The Statesmen are off for the next three weeks before returning to action on Monday, Dec. 30, when they visit Hartwick. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
