Wesleyan skates by Hobart

Box Score The Wesleyan hockey team's Elliott Vorel posted a hat trick to lead the Cardinals to a 6-2 win over visiting Hobart this afternoon. It was the first meeting of the teams in nine seasons and improved Wesleyan's all-time record in the series to 5-1.  Wesleyan improves to 5-2-1 and the Statesmen fall to 2-3-4.

Vorel got things started for Wesleyan just 4:30 into the contest as he chased down a puck sent from Wesleyan's end into the Hobart zone by senior Jackson Brandstetter, then moved from the left circle in front to beat Hobart starting keeper sophomore Lino Chimienti.

It took the Statesmen just 11 seconds to respond as first-year Tyler Hanzlik won a right-circle faceoff and classmate Bobby Sokol got the puck and fired a slapper past Cardinal first-year keeper Dawson Sprigings to make it 1-1. Wesleyan went on to score the next five goals to open up a 6-1 lead less than six minutes into the third period.

Hobart got the final goal with six minutes remaining as first-year Nick Bingaman dropped a pass to junior Brad McBride in the left circle and his slap shot rose high into the right side of the net. It was McBride's second goal of the season.

In between Hobart tallies, Vorel put home a pair for Wesleyan's third and fifth markers while senior Tommy Hartnett picked up goals two and six in similar fashion, skating from deep on the right to the front of the net and stuffing home a backhander. Wesleyan's fourth goal came off the stick of sophomore Eric Casey as he used a screen on the left side of the slot to sling in a shot early in the middle stanza.

Sprigings finished the game with 33 saves as Hobart generated a 35-23 margin in shots.  Chimienti made four saves in the first period, allowing three goals. First-year Tim Keegan played the final two frames, making 13 stops on 16 shots.

Hobart will wrap up the calendar year at New England College at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8.
