#3 Herons to face #2 Trinity in NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer National Championship

The No. 3 William Smith College Herons will face No. 2 Trinity (Texas) in the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer National Championship match today at 2:30 p.m. EST (1:30 p.m. CST). The Herons are making their fourth appearance in the national championship game in school history.

William Smith is making its 24th NCAA tournament appearance and has played in the national championship game in 1987, 1988 and in 1997. The Herons won the school's first team national championship in 1988. The Tigers are making their 19th appearance in the tournament and have never won the national championship.

William Smith and Trinity last met on Sept. 16, 2006. The Herons traveled to then No. 4 Trinity and lost 2-1 in overtime. William Smith took a 1-0 lead just over two minutes into the second half. Almost three minutes later, the Tigers evened the score. Trinity netted the game-winning goal in the 92nd minute.

William Smith (22-1-0) is currently riding a 22-match win streak and a 15-match shutout streak. The Herons have posted program records for wins in a season and shutouts in a season (20). The Herons lead the nation in shutout percentage (.869) and rank second in goals against average (0.26) and win percentage (.957).

William Smith is led in scoring by junior Madeline Buckley. She has posted 24 points on nine goals and six assists. First-year Kara Shue has notched a team-high 10 assists this year, including assisting on the game winner in yesterday's 1-0 victory over Capital. She has added six goals for 22 points. Junior Krista Longo, who notched the game-winning goal against the Crusaders, has produced seven goals and three assists for 17 points. Senior goalie Chelsea Dunay is sporting a 0.26 goals against average and a .915 save percentage. She is 22-1-0 in goal this year, setting a William Smith season record for wins. Dunay also earned a Heron season record for shutouts with 17 this year.

In the last national rankings, Trinity led Division III in assists, points, scoring offense and win percentage. The Tigers are led in scoring by Emily Jorgens. She has produced 66 points on 18 goals and 30 assists this year. Kelsey Falcone has chipped in a team-high 21 goals and added 14 assists for 56 points. Devan Osegueda has played the majority of minutes in goal this year for the Tigers. She has recorded a 0.50 goals against average and a .795 save percentage.
